Back pain can stem from a wide variety of causes, ranging from minor muscle strains to more serious medical conditions.

ree

Musculoskeletal Causes

  • Muscle or Ligament Strain – Often due to heavy lifting, sudden awkward movements, or poor posture.

  • Sprains – Tearing of ligaments from overuse or injury.

  • Poor posture – Sitting or standing incorrectly for long periods can strain the spine.

  • Overuse injuries – Repetitive motions or prolonged activity without proper conditioning.

Spinal Issues

  • Herniated or bulging discs – Discs between vertebrae can press on nerves, causing pain, numbness, or tingling.

  • Degenerative disc disease – Discs wear down over time, reducing cushioning and causing pain.

  • Spinal stenosis – Narrowing of the spinal canal, which compresses nerves.

  • Spondylolisthesis – A vertebra slips out of place, pressing on nerves.

Inflammatory or Systemic Conditions

  • Arthritis – Inflammation of spinal joints, especially in older adults.

  • Autoimmune diseases – Conditions like ankylosing spondylitis can cause chronic inflammation in the spine.

  • Infections or tumors – Rare, but serious causes that require immediate medical attention.

⚠️ Red Flags – When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if your back pain:

  • Lasts more than a few weeks.

  • Is severe and doesn’t improve with rest.

  • Radiates down your legs, especially below the knee.

  • Causes weakness, numbness, or tingling.

  • Is accompanied by fever, unexplained weight loss, or bowel/bladder issues.
